Robin Wales on Radio 5

In the wake of Michael Gove’s call for schools to teach ‘British values’ the mayor was invited onto Radio 5 to discuss the matter with Shelagh Fogarty.

This is what he had to say:

    Wales seems to be saying in the clip that the Newham Mag will be closing down? He had a rant about Eric Pickles and claimed the Mag was essential for bringing communities together. He wasn’t challenged at all by the journalist.

      I think the presenter was simply confused. She seemed to think Wales was saying Pickles wouldn’t let them publish articles promoting community cohesion, rather than that it was being closed down by central government diktat. It was certainly an odd tangent go off on.

      But perhaps this is his new tactic for trying to save the Mag: it’s vitally important for pushing the Tories’ ‘Britishness’ agenda.
