Temporary housing

29 Sep

From the Newham Recorder:

More people are living in temporary accommodation in the borough than anywhere else in London.

Homelessness data from the Office for National Statistics show 3,956 Newham households were resident in temporary shelter between April 2015 and March 2016.
The figures – the most up-to-date available – also reveal 2,448 households were deemed eligible for action under the Housing Acts, the highest amount in London and second-highest in England after Birmingham.

Newham also had the second-highest number of households accepted as homeless and in priority need – 1,345 – again behind only Birmingham.

Of the households living in temporary accommodation, 79 were in bed and breakfasts, 27 in hostels, 127 in local or housing authority stock, 1,690 in leased private sector property and 2,033 in other properties.

Also included is the ethnicity of homeless households, with 474 black or black British, 396 Asian or Asian British and 314 white.

Meanwhile on Twitter Cllr Jose Alexander points to Red Door Ventures, the council’s for-profit housing company, as an example of how Newham is “tackling housing crises.” (sic)

Yep. Tackling the housing crisis by charging £1,500 a month for a two-bed flat in Stratford.

if there is any truth in the rumour lbn councillors are charging that sort of rent money to the people of the borough they should be put in stocks and pelted with rotten veg .i did hear that they are selling off rental housing and are taken them off the social housing register and did not want to believe that either ,i do not know what has become of our labour party but it looks like they are the new tories of newham .i gather the government has capped the benefits to £350 so if you are unfortunate to lose your job it would not even pay the rent on a council home if you could get one ,keir hardy must be turning in his grave watching what this bunch of money grabbing elected are up to .someone have a word with corbyn and mcdonnell and tell them they are right about labour it has lost its way and needs a bit of tough love especially here in eastham town hall .

This is one of the biggest jokes going its alright if you earn what Wales and this cronies earn you can afford to pay the rent, this guy has got into bed with developers and stuck two fingers up at social tennents in Newham (blame the tories for all this ellks) sold more social housing than any mayor in London. The regenration in Newham has not worked, but put more Newham residents in the hand of private rouge landlords. Wales is a tinpot dictator controlling his councillors with lead members roles that offer large perks which they are all fighting for. Why is public funds being used for a Red Door Ventures a private company and wales is the director, chris wood as CE (left Newham with a cloud hanging over him), even councillor forhad hussian has a role in this venture ( he recently brought a council property only to put on the rental market). Red Door Ventures is not for social housing tennents but for the city types, that wales is trying to lure to Newham gentrifing it. This will be a little nest egg for Wales if he hangs the mayoral boots up, or is he trying to compete with Cllr Ayesha Choudry who built a property empire whilst living in social housing. GET THIS LOT OUT A DISCRACE TO THE LABOUR PARTY.

how can the mayor be a director on red door surely that is a conflict of interest and what about monopolies has anyone else got dibs on newham property ,this is not legal is it? or can newham change how councils spend public money and who can be the decision maker .i wonder how many newham residents know about this or understand what its about .its a private company making profits for its workforce to exist using public money or am i barmy and its all a dream .

I think people are missing the point here about Red Door Ventures.

Red Door is not about housing the homeless, its all about generating an income for Red Door Ventures. To do that, you have to charge market rents. This is why the first Red Door project at Leather Gardens delivered no affordable housing at all.

This was a particular disgrace as it was built on Council (public) owned land, not land purchased off a developer for a stupid price.

Robin Wales talks about Red Door offering a range of rent levels but his actions reveal the truth.

To be clear Wales has not “got into bed with developers”, he wants to be the developer! With a regular supply of cheap/free public (Council) land to develop, he can build more cheaply than the greedy developers, charge higher rents and make more money!

Councillor Clark the Planning Committee chair (appointed by .. err Mayor Wales) would need to be careful, if he demanded that Red Door’s housing schemes complied with policy and included 35% affordable housing.

its all about money and that is a terrible shame ,i heard good things about mr clark and hope he would bring some sense to the council chamber ,i hope he is not going to be part of the status quo and do things that suit other councillors who have been shovelling stuff for years rather than helping the people of newham .
