   is this anything new? Before I left for greener pastures in 2011, I had lived in the borough since 1957, when I was born. I became politically active in 1975 and was a Labour Party member for 34 years. I am struggling to remember a time when council business wasn’t all agreed and settled in Labour group meetings. It was the same when SRW was in charge, if not worse. It can be argued that there was once some balance brought in the Labour Party local government committee when there was , until SRW, the opportunity to debate and form policy.

   My understanding is that with the Newham CLPs still suspended, all such committees are history and, quite frankly, the people of Newham get what they vote for. That is a local Labour Party that gags criticism and is in thrall to millionaire property owners who place their puppets into extremely well remunerated positions. Plus cą change, plus c’est la même chose.

   Whatever one thought about the days before SRW, and I wasn’t a fan, at least the local Labour Party was made up largely of working people who had the interests of their brothers and sisters in the forefront of their minds, rather than what they could make out of being a councillor or party rep.

   Politicians with ulterior motives are hardly a new breed and the carpet baggers who ‘do their working class bit’ until they move onto a parliamentary candidacy, well paid employment elsewhere, etc, are certainly not new. Raising educational standards, providing decent housing and keeping the brightest and best in the Borough once they have graduated, has always been a challenge but it is not a challenge that many have risen to. It sounds as if the mayor and her supporters are just the latest in a long list of people who flatter to deceive and ultimately fail.
