The Conservatives held a fund-raising auction on Monday night. One of the items up for sale was match day hospitality in the Directors’ Box at West Ham.
It won’t have fetched much. We know from councillor Lester Hudson’s register of gifts and hospitality that it’s only worth £25.
Councillor Lester Hudson, despite his many roles and responsibilities on Newham Council, is clearly not as popular with gift and hospitality givers as the elected Mayor, Sir Robin Wales; Councillor Hudson only received 4 gifts over the last 12 months whereas Sir Robin has received 35 – https://mgov.newham.gov.uk/mgListGifts.aspx?UID=524. Actually Sir Robin would have listed more than 35 gifts and hospitality but for the helpful Pipers Project who co-ordinated many, though not all, of Sir Robin’s gifts and hospitality enabling him and his large entourage to attend the MIPIM in the South of France last year for free (http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/307383/Tycoons-hookers-and-our-council-fatcats-party-in-Cannes). And unlike Cllr Hudson’s modest gifts, we don’t know the value of the vast majority of Sir Robin’s gifts, only that they are valued at “over £25”. So they could be worth hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds, on top of his £81,027 annual allowance.
Gill,
I blogged about the Cannes trip here: https://forestgate.net/2012/04/17/cannes-of-worms/
And there’s an update naming the people who paid for the trip here: https://forestgate.net/2012/04/30/cannes-update/
Of course, even when the mayor is forthcoming about gifts he isn’t above undervaluing them if it suits him: https://forestgate.net/2013/09/27/how-to-get-an-ipad-mini-for-just-130/
with best regards,
Martin
